Dorset Museum & Art Gallery is the home of more than 4 million objects that unlock the secrets of Dorset’s natural world, archaeology, history, art and culture.
In the Natural Dorset gallery, see 250 million years of natural history come alive and wonder at Jurassic Coast discoveries that put Dorset on the map for fossil hunters.
In the Hardy’s Dorset Gallery, discover the life and work of Dorset’s famous novelist and poet Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) and dive into key themes of his personal and professional life.
In the People’s Dorset Gallery, explore 500,000 years of people’s history, from the Palaeolithic to the present day, on Dorset’s key themes of land, sea and community. Marvel at objects from some of Britain’s most important archaeological sites, from spectacular Bronze Age gold and finds from Maiden Castle – one of Britain’s largest Iron Age hillforts – to treasures from Roman Dorchester.
In the Artist’s Dorset Gallery, enjoy our superb collections of paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, textiles, and fine and decorative art. See our significant collection from the sculptor Elisabeth Frink alongside portraits by Thomas Gainsborough and George Romney. Get to know Chaldon Herring’s 1920s and 1930s creative community, including novelist Sylvia Townsend Warner and her partner, poet Valentine Ackland.
In the Victorian Hall, view our genuine Roman mosaic floors (one of the very few in Europe you can actually stand on).
Our Temporary Exhibition Space showcases national and international artworks, exhibits and stories as part of our programme of temporary and touring exhibitions.
